Dreamworks titles figure prominently. Go figure.

Tom Freund - North American Long Weekend (red ant)
Yeah, I know, not exactly this years model, but man...the kind of understated cool that will ensure its presence on critics lists in another decade. Plus he's 27 and he's not in the business of knowing. Good luck finding this in Canada.

Andrea Koziol - Coming Of Age (toronto indie)
An cool album with and passionate intensity.

Eels - Electroshock Blues  (dreamworks)
This felt sort of under-composed at first, but a few listens revealed the sharp, unsettling hooks that stay in your head and pop in there when you least expect.
Plus their show at Lee's Palace was the best thing I saw all year (well, maybe along with Starling and Danny Michel at the Reverb right before Christmas)

Renann - Renann (toronto indie)
Sorry if I'm being sexist, but think Chrissie Hynde, Courtney Love, Patti Smith, Marianne Faithful, Kim Gordon. An apologetic "rock chick" with great songs, a powerhouse live band and miles and miles of edgy charm. Now give me back my "Contact '98" ok?

Rufus Wainwright (dreamworks)
Well, Duh.

Steve Haflidson  (toronto indie)
AAA singer songwriter, not too edgy but solid as a rock and beguiling as fuck. includes a moody pre-JLP Alanis co-write called "Gone" tuneful in a way John Hiatt hasn't been for a couple of albums now.

Elvis Costello & Burt Bacharach (mercury)

The Look Of Love - The Burt Bacharach Collection (Rhino Box Set)
but for entirely different reasons. Half my friends love the Costello/Bacharach album, half hate it but no-one denies it's very cool, even on paper. And then some fucker from Shift ripped off my question to Greil Marcus about it. But it grows on you immensely, even those Boddickery DX7's in "Such Unlikely Lovers". As far as the box set goes, Lou Johnson's "The Last One To Be Loved" became one of my favourite songs ever with one listen. It's very cool to have so many of the bases covered, but it sort of errs on the side of productions Burt was personally involved with, even if they weren't the definitive tracks (my version would have had The Buckingham's "Are You There? (with another Girl)" and Ike Hayes' "Don't Know What To Do With Myself", but then again no one asked me...)

Lucinda Williams - Car Wheels on a Gravel Road (Mercury)
I resisted listening to her albums for so long because of the way people described them they were like vitamins or scriptures or something that was "good for me". Well do I stand corrected. More like a shot of Jack in a glass with one of those pink umbrellas. Fuck this a good album.

Of Montreal - Cherry Peel (bar/none)
Of Montreal -The Bird That Ate the Rabbit's Flower EP (kindercore)
Caught these kids at CMJ, and it sounds like teenage kids who not only know how to sound like the Beatles, Kinks, Who, et. al. but have their own unique worldview and enough original wonky hooks to make each song a treat. singer Kevin reminds me of Momus for some reason. i haven't smiled so much at a gig since i don't know
when. just fantastic.

Snakefarm - Songs from my Funeral (kneeling elephant/bmg)
transplanted Belgians Anna Domino and Michel Delory's trip-hop project rework some traditional American songs (think St. James Infirmary, Frankie & Johnny, House of the Rising Sun) into something else entirely. Unbelievably cool and really really inventive. Plus I used to have a picture of Anna in my locker in high school. Then again, I had pictures of k.d. lang and Frank Zappa in my locker in high school.

Hangovers from '97 and other new favourites:
Jeremy Robinson - Good and Gone (toronto indie)
Pernice Brothers - Overcome by Happiness (Sub Par)
Ivy - Apartment Life (mine says Atlantic, ha)
Bill Puddle (Huge Records)
David Garza - This Euphoria (lava/atlantic)
Bill Morrissey - You'll Never Get To Heaven (philo/rounder)
Jill Sobule - Happy Town (atlantic)
Kim Fox - Moon Hut (dreamworks)
Lee Feldman - Living It All Wrong (mercury)
Getz/Gilberto and Jazz Samba Reissues (Verve)
The Cardigans - Gran Turismo (Stockholm)
Julie Doiron - Loneliest in the Morning (Sub Par)
Jonny Polonski - My Name Is Jonny (american)

yeah, so i can't count either
