The Look Of Love - The Burt Bacharach Collection (Rhino Box Set)
but for entirely different reasons. Half my friends love the Costello/Bacharach album, half hate it but no-one denies it's very cool, even on paper. And then some fucker from Shift ripped off my question to Greil Marcus about it. But it grows on you immensely, even those Boddickery DX7's in "Such Unlikely Lovers". As far as the box set goes, Lou Johnson's "The Last One To Be Loved" became one of my favourite songs ever with one listen. It's very cool to have so many of the bases covered, but it sort of errs on the side of productions Burt was personally involved with, even if they weren't the definitive tracks (my version would have had The Buckingham's "Are You There? (with another Girl)" and Ike Hayes' "Don't Know What To Do With Myself", but then again no one asked me...)
Lucinda Williams - Car Wheels on a Gravel Road (Mercury)
I resisted listening to her albums for so long because of the way people described them they were like vitamins or scriptures or something that was "good for me". Well do I stand corrected. More like a shot of Jack in a glass with one of those pink umbrellas. Fuck this a good album.
Of Montreal - Cherry Peel (bar/none)
Of Montreal -The Bird That Ate the Rabbit's Flower EP (kindercore)
Caught these kids at CMJ, and it sounds like teenage kids who not only know how to sound like the Beatles, Kinks, Who, et. al. but have their own unique worldview and enough original wonky hooks to make each song a treat. singer Kevin reminds me of Momus for some reason. i haven't smiled so much at a gig since i don't know
when. just fantastic.
Snakefarm - Songs from my Funeral (kneeling elephant/bmg)
transplanted Belgians Anna Domino and Michel Delory's trip-hop project rework some traditional American songs (think St. James Infirmary, Frankie & Johnny, House of the Rising Sun) into something else entirely. Unbelievably cool and really really inventive. Plus I used to have a picture of Anna in my locker in high school. Then again, I had pictures of k.d. lang and Frank Zappa in my locker in high school.
